About the Job
La Jolla Country Club is a private country club featuring an 18-hole golf course situated on 195 acres just above La Jolla Village.
We are seeking a motivated and experienced 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our Greens Department. This position reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.
Under their direction, the 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent assists with planning, supervising, and participating in the maintenance of the golf course, including tees, greens, fairways, bunkers, cart paths, and irrigation systems. This position also helps oversee daily operations, employee training, equipment maintenance, and chemical applications. The 2nd Assistant may assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendent with planning, scheduling, and supervising daily golf course maintenance operations.
- Oversee and participate in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, irrigation systems, and other golf course areas.
- Supervise, train, and provide direction to golf course maintenance employees, including equipment operation and safety procedures.
- Perform and oversee fertilizer and chemical applications in accordance with applicable safety regulations and guidelines.
- Monitor irrigation systems and ensure proper watering of greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.
- Oversee the proper operation, cleaning, and preventive maintenance of golf course equipment.
- Assist with department safety training, equipment inspections, and compliance with applicable safety regulations.
- Assist with golf course improvement projects, including aerification, seeding, sodding, and general course renovations.
- Serve as a weekend supervisor and provide leadership and direction to employees when assigned.
- Report employee performance and disciplinary concerns to the Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Previous golf course maintenance or landscaping experience preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of golf course maintenance equipment, irrigation systems, and turf care is a plus.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain various types of golf course equipment.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and properly handle fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals.
- Ability to train, direct, and supervise employees.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Availability to work occasional weekends and supervise employees working overtime.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Schedule and Compensation
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
- Weekends: Some weekends required.
- Pay Range: $30.00 – $38.00 per hour, depending on experience.
